Anna Provatari, Untitled
In this piece, Provatari uses footage from what seems to be a Panigiri, a folk type of celebratory festival that is still prevalent in Greek rural areas and is considered to be a bastion of traditional folk culture. Through her research, the artist discovered the these type of festivities and a the focus on the circular collective dances were used as a cultural tool in order to define Greek national identity throughout the 20th century. The fact that this type of folk imaginary was profound to the propaganda imagery used by the last military dictatorship of the country has led Provatari to infuse the video with the sound of military equipment in order to transform this folk party into a scene of looming maleficence.
