Thanos Intzes, Knitted Nation
In this outdoor installation, Intzes uses his background as a sculptor in order to create a prop that implies a performative action. A flag reminiscent of the first Greek one, made out of doily cloth, is waved in front of the sea. This duality between the material and the subject matter is what drives the piece. The horizon is sometimes hidden while the flag itself is not as solid as its symbolic aspect. In this work, the flag and alongside it, the institutions it represents are see-through and fragile, while the individual and the community they represent stand there, waving it in a manner that can be both menacing or harmless, malicious or welcoming.
